Works by Laurent Perbos are directly and immediately recognizable allusions to the world of sports and games. The artist nevertheless blithely makes a few changes that inevitably prompt a new interpretation. Thus he will transport playing ?elds to incongruous locations, or deform a ping-pong table, or alter a ball. In Perbos’s work GolemBall for Ceci n’est pas un Casino, the point of departure was the creation of life. A golem—a fantastic creature that was usually created from a mound of clay—here arises from a mass of tennis balls. This threatening-looking, day-glo yel-low monster comes to life before our eyes, rising above our heads. It is fur-thermore pierced by javelins, as though coming from a battle whose traces are also visible on the walls. This imagery evokes scenes of pre-historic hunts or depictions of Saint Sebastian riddled with arrows, remind-ing us that the javelin, prior to becom-ing an item of sport, was a dreaded weapon used by soldiers and hunters.
