Annika Larsson’s ?lm Untitled (Blind 1) shows a young man playing with a soc-cer ball. Alone on the ?eld, he makes a series of moves with skill and ease, never losing control of the ball. The action takes place in total silence, the only background sound being a hint of music that seems to accompany the choreography of foot-and-ball. At ?rst sight, everything seems ordinary. Then several close-ups reveal something unusual: the young man’s eyes are opaquely white, indicating blindness. Suddenly, our perception of the scene and the young man’s skill changes dra-matically. A new interpretation, in light of this evidence, is needed to decipher his movements. “Blind soccer,” which is spreading to an increasing number of countries, is played according to speci?c rules that adapt the game, without spoiling it, to this speci?c handicap. The ball is equipped with a noise-making device that allows players to locate its position and to orient themselves on the ?eld. Everything else must thus remain silent for the game to be played. The back-ground sound-track for the ?lm was composed and performed by Larsson herself, using a Buchla synthesizer; because she was totally unfamiliar with this complex instrument, the artist had to proceed “blindly,” so to speak, in order to ?nd her own way forward.
