Olaf Val’s interactive sculpture, soberly titled Verstärker (ampli?er), looks like an object with no potential for enter-tainment. On a stylized, white base sits a single lightbulb; in front of it is a PlayStation controller. At ?rst sight, these two components seem totally unconnected—the ?rst is used for light-ing, while the second seems pointless without its essential attributes of screen and console. The only thing they share is the electricity that makes them work. The controller, normally used to move within a video game, is here used to alter the brightness of the light given off by the bulb. Upon re?ection, what initially appeared simplistic and mo-notonous assumes its full meaning. Interaction takes over. Henceforth, the bulb plays the role of the most sophisti-cated games, generating a play of light with multifarious nuances, a luminous suite to the rhythm of Morse code. Here the complex structure of a video game, governed by numerous proces-sors and microcontrollers and then projected on a screen, is reduced to its two basic components: electricity and light. Furthermore, the lightbulb evokes the lighted signs in game halls and casinos, attracting potential players to their glow like moths to a ?ame.
