Patrick Bérubé’s Demi-mesure invites us to have fun on a large trampoline in the middle of the exhibition room. The excitement and enthusiasm of visitors willing to have a try are quickly squashed, however, because the ceiling is so low that the only possible way to enter is on knees or bent double. In addition to being uncomfortable, the space is sti?ing and oppressive. Did somebody get the dimensions wrong, or is the artist playing a deliberate joke? In the end, it hardly matters: the object of desire remains unusable and lifeless, thus becoming a simple object to be looked at. Adventurous visitors may have a try anyway, vainly attempt-ing to get some pleasure from this “half measure” into which the artist has led us by the nose, having his own somewhat cynical and ironic fun.
