The somewhat grim appearance of the basketball court installed by Marc Bijl for Afterhours, with its fence and bare equipment, recalls big-city playgrounds squeezed between two high-rises or set next to parking lots. These grounds are an integral part of urban culture and have long transcended their initial purpose—the games that are played there are often background action or excuses for gatherings not just of kids but of gangs who make it their favorite place to deal drugs or indulge in other dangerous pastimes. This image is obviously stereotyped. The media largely fuel it, inspired partly by a reality that they distort in order to make things appear more spectacular. Reappropriated by mass culture, such playgrounds now serve as a setting for ads for fashion items and other goods, with a view to conveying street culture’s hip image.Bijl here reduces the basketball court to a simple sign, a logo that no longer takes its original purpose into account. This playground remains inaccessi-ble—unusable, composed of arti?cial elements, staged like a theater set, and plunged into the anxiety-inducing gloom of nighttime—and it can only be grasped from a distance, from the exterior.
