Kids and adults alike look forward to the arrival of fun fairs. Among the clutter of stands and rides—each more spectacular than the last—crowds mill about in search of thrills, dazzled by the colored lights and the beat of popular music.Pierre Ardouvin’s Love Me Tender combines several typical fairground features: light, music and ride—in this case, bumper cars. Bumper cars, along with Ferris wheel and roller-coaster, are an emblematic part of this public fun. Once on the track, all bumper-car drivers are equal and can slam into their counterparts to their heart’s delight.Ardouvin, however, has placed one bumper car, all alone, in the middle of a track too small to take any others. Bore-dom—an amusement park’s sworn ene-my—thus becomes palpable here, and the scene looks far more melancholy than “fun.” We can sense the yearning of this bumper car, in desperate search of a partner in the ?gurative as well as literal sense, because more than just a place of entertainment, fun fairs are a key site of youthful ?irtation, somewhat like dance ?oors, where teenagers wait impatiently for the opening strains of a slow number, in the hopes of a cheek-to-cheek.
