Letizia Romanini likes working with a highly varied range of materials, rede?ning their use. Manual work is part of her approach, and from there she boldly launches into occasionally laborious creative projects. For Ceci n’est pas un Casino, Romanini took up “French knitting,” a technique used to knit tubes of wool, in order to produce a basketball net. Romanini’s is not a standard basketball net: hers is 130 meters long, and falls to the ?oor so that the end gets lost in a jumble. With the hoop placed at the regulation height of 3.05 meters (10 feet), the remaining 126.95 meters of net spread across the ?oor, imprisoning the ball, which cannot ?nd its way out. The net thereby swallows up the ball—and any other object—bringing the game to an end. Like a reverse Ariadne’s thread, the net leads not to an exit but, at best, to the entrance hoop. The mohair wool chosen by Romanini lends an elegant, sleek appearance to the work, while its black color and long ?bers give it an almost organic look.
