The Family of Man of Edward Steichen in Clervaux, Luxembourg
The "Family of Man" was one of the world's most important exhibitions in the history of photography. Originally shown at the MOMA in New York in 1955, the exhibition’s goal was, according to Steichen, to explain mankind to men through the universal language of photography. Steichen selected among 4 million pictures 503 photos from 273 different photographers from 68 different countries. Among them were artists like Henri Cartier-Bresson, Robert Capa, Dorothea Lange, Robert Doisneau, August Sander. These pictures compose the 37 themes of « The Family of Man ” : love, faith in Man, birth, labour, family, children, education, war and peace…. This extraordinary show toured worldwide and met with an enormous success.
Today, visitors of all countries come to see it in Clervaux in the North of Luxembourg. ( http://www.family-of-man.public.lu )
